installing win98 with upgrade cd

I want to install win98se but i remember at install it asks for authentication and I usually just showed it my old win98 cd but i don't have that anymore. I want to install from the win98se upgrade cd. When it asks for a previous version of windows can I point to my windows xp hard drive or where to? I want to know if I can install win98 in a seperate partition alongside winxp with only the win98 upgrade cd.

Snowmonkey, your reply is right but technically incorrect.
The upgrade CD does have all the files for a 'clean' install but it also has a checking routine which can't be bypassed. That's the only difference between the upgrade and full version. Proof that the upgrade CD has all the files u need for a clean install is that u don't need to have an earlier version actually installed - u start with a blank hard disk, tell the upgrade CD where your other CD is, it checks it (doesn't copy any files from it) then installs from the upgrade. All the files it needs are on there. I've done it scores of times. Of course, none of this is any help to the original poster, but just had to put u right!

Lightbulb

Just create a file named win.com on your HDD and you'll be able to install win98 from your upgrade CD

Pip

Oh my, you have much to learn my friend!

When Windows setup checks for the existence of WIN.COM,
it doesn't just check for the filename (what a doddle that would be to crack), it actually reads the contents of the file to make sure it's not a fake. DOH!
