system startup

Just finished installing a "new" old computer with windows 98 se. Everything went smoothly, al the drivers required where installed and if i check the system i have no errors or "strange devices". I have also installed all the software i needed and the antivirus.

Updated the system with everything required according to ms, except the ie sp1 and the direct x 9, wich i wont be needing.

Now i must wait about 40 minuts to load my system! it's insane, but i get the windows98 image on my screen and the status bar in lower part of the screen just doesn't move.

Any thoughs on this wierd issue?

thanks in advance

Try re-installing the OS without installing the SP1 and DirectX 9. It seems that your hardware is old and does not support DirectX 9.

1st of all, thanks for you're help. Forgot to say that.

I did updated the system like that before trying to get some help. Also did this:

1. changed the network card (could be some problems but...)
2. changed the motherboard drivers, usb drivers, etc
3. changed the graphic card drivers...
4. donne a complete check on the disk (including surface)

come out empty in all these case.

So what could be the problem?

thanks in advance and regards

yeap, i'm part of a network, but that's no problem. i'm experienced enough with it. it's no big deal. I did change the nic just in case. Some times a bad nic can give you some problems (heck, i had big troubles with a nt computer and a cdrom drive )

The real order of troubleshutting was:

1. Updating the motherboard drivers, usb drivers, etc with the mb manufactor drives.

2. updated the graphic card drivers by the manufactor drives

3. Updating the so with all the microsoft update said it was needed, besides the ie sp1 and the directX 9 drives.

4. donne a complete check on the disk (including surface)

5. changed the network card (because it was just to be shure if that long time of waiting wouldn't be by looking for some net drive or something. Also tryed to startup the computer without net adapters and drivers but nothing changed.)

i know it's some win driver that in getting on my nerve. If i boot in safe mode all go whell. If i work around with the msconfig, and checkout the drivers of win.ini and system.ini, all of then it go ok. All the others i get hang up with the 40 minuts boot !!!!

This way to strange and i've been around for sometime now!

lol, actually i don't think so. I use a red hat linux 9 server as a pdc and my clients are xp. However i have this software i need to use and it only runs on 98 or prior, wich uses a hardlock ( so i can't use xp since the lock drivers are quite diferent ). I dump 98 almost 5 years now (used NT 4 wich was a nice piece of software).

not shure if was that. I left the computer in another office for 2 days and then they reported the error. According to then nothing has been donne to the computer, but the fact remains, when i left it, it was working smoothly! Already decided to format and re-install everything, but i was curious about what could be responsable for this.
Thanks for u're help once again though and regards
