Need help with my Sound on windows ME

Hey guys! This is my first post. I'm not great with computers and my sound doesn't work. The icon with my sound option has disappeared and when I check my sound option under sounds and multimedia the sound level is locked at off. My adware, SSD, CW shredder can't find anything wrong with my computer. I don't know when this first tarted I just noticed it around 5 months ago. I have windows ME so I don't think I have a restore option. Is there any way to fix my sound options or download anything to replace my sound thing??? A step by step explaination would be appreaciated because i'm not all that good with computers.

Welcome! Yes you do have "system restore" but, if the problem has been let go for any great length (you mention 5 months) then most likely it will not help anyways.

I would suggest to first start by heading to control panel (start > control panel ) > System > hardware > Device manager > now scroll down the list and note any yellow flagged items. You will most likely see one that is asssociated with your sound. Double click on it and check the status (it should tell you whether or not it is working correctly.....most likely not > Try and "enable" the sound if possible or click on the "Driver" tab and try and "update" the driver. Follow instructions as required.
This may or may not correct the problem. if you get a message reporting that updating the driver was not possible for some reason then post back that message.

As I said.......If the problem existed for any great length of time "system restore" will not help! Why? because system restore keeps a "running tab" on the system stats that moves forward every day. I believe in ME the window is 2 months (by default). So what that means is that if a problem is allowed to exist for a period greater than that window....then it will not be possible for the system to go back to an earlier date at which the problem doesn't exist.

But hey! By all means one could certainly try it though, as it won't cause any problems.

Well I did what you said but it got weird when I scrolled down. It showed

Sound, video, and game controllers

under it showed

Game port for Creative SB! Live

(and)

wave device for windows modem

It said that the devices were working properly. I tried updating the driver and it always says that it is on the best location already. So what do I do now???

(by the way my speakers are plugged in, are on, and are functioning fine just in case any of you were thinking I was stupid enough to not check that

go back to the device manager like Overclocked Doc instructed above, then click the + next to sound, right click each device listed under the sound devices and select remove or uninstall if it has the option. once you have all that it will let you remove, close the screens and reboot. when you reboot the hardware will reinstall it's self, if this does not fix it try the card on a different pci slot, or in bios disable onboard sound devices save it like that, boot up to windows, then shut down and enable the sound in the bios and boot back up. unless you removed the sound driver, or the hardware is completely bad, this should get you going again.
