OE 6

Is there a workaround or something else I can use to access my hotmail account in express?

You simply enter your hotmail address and password, express does the rest.

To further expound:

Open OE6

Tools, Accounts

Add, Mail

Fill in your name

fill in your emailaddress@hotmail.com

and from there it sets up your hotmail account
