Outlook Express Won't Remember Password

I cannot get Outlook Express to remember my email password.

I can enter the password and check the "remember password" box on account setup, but when I save the settings and return to the setup, the password is cleared and the box in unchecked.

When I Send/Receive I get prompted to enter password, and the "remember password" box is greyed out - I cannot check it.

Any ideas ? Thanks to all,

LeSkoonk

Do these at your own risk. I am not responsible. This should work though.

Are you on Windows 95 or Windows 98 or Me?

It may be that you don't have a password file on your computer or .PWL file.

Search for .pwl files (usually in c:\windows)

most often, people use a blank password to log into windows once and they don't see that log in again

But if u do have a password and u do get a login prompt for windows, then enter the password and log in

if u don't want to log in with a password (meaning change it to blank) or u can't remember the password, then delete the .pwl files (or u can be save and just rename them to .bak files)

windows keeps one .pwl file for each user.

reboot or LOG OFF

then windows will prompt u for a userid and password, type a userid u want, and then just hit enter on the password.

u should now be able to save Outlook Express passwords

I think that Microsoft have released a patch for this problem. I'll try and find it later.

Hi, Are you dumping Cookies? Some programs store the password info in a Cookie. You delete it. You have to put it back. Maybe? Luck, Jim

Probably something in your computer like a virus or something is deleting the cookie.

Try this

Open Outlook Express
Goto the TOOLS menu above
Choose ACCOUNTS
Goto the MAIL TAB at the top (there are several)
Click once on the email account concerned
Click on the PROPERTIES button to the right

Now you can check your settings

The GENERAL TAB at the top
Make sure Receive mail box is ticked

The SERVERS TAB at the top
Make sure your username and password are correct
From here make sure REMEMBER PASSWORD IS TICKED
And check this one

Make sure LOGON USING SECURE PASSWORD AUTHENTICATION is NOT ticked

Below that you will find outgoing settings
Make sure these are set at your ISP settings

Should work fine for you now

Password not saving in outlook issue

Microsoft has released an updated version of KB 290684 That helped me get outlook to remember my password. The following has been added to the article. By following the "resolution" below, I was able to get it working. By the way this was just updated August 29th, 2007
CAUSE
This behavior occurs if the registry contains incorrect information for the Protected Storage System Provider subkey for the user account.

This problem may also occur if the following registry entry is missing from the user profiles:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\Appdata
Note This value is used to provide the path for the Application Data folder.

RESOLUTION
The following resolution should not be used unless all other relevant password troubleshooting has been tried.

To resolve this behavior, remove the user account information from the Protected Storage System Provider subkey. Then, reenter your password options. To do this, follow the steps for your operating system.

If the Appdata registry entry is missing from the user profiles, follow these steps:1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Expandable String Value.
4. Type AppData for the registry value name.
5. Right-click the AppData registry value, and then click Modify.
6. Type %userprofile%\Application Data in the Value data field, and then click OK.
7. On the File menu, click Exit.
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

Outlook Express Won't Save Password

I have put up with this for months and eventually found the answer.

I had "remeber my password" ticked and in the account properties I had "Logon using secure password authentication" unticked.

It still wouldn't change. I tried this:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_oe_passwords.htm

... and it worked a treat!!
