windows me to windows 98?

Can someone tell me what points to the version of dos? I have windows me and want to convert back to windows 98 but when I try to install, it says that there is a newer version already installed. What I actually did/do is, I boot up to a disk then rename a copy of windows 98 to windows and rename windows me to something else so that I am booting up to windows 98 with the exception that I get an incorrect dos version error message at the start. I then try to reinstall windows 98 to fix this but as stated previously, it won't let me. Thanks for any help on this.

Let me say this at first, that is one of the most confusing things I have ever read on a Support Forum.

Are you wanting to "upgrade" or wanting to erase everything on the disk?

It's really not all that complicated. I have ME installed but I also have a copy of windows 98 on the disk as well. If I wanted to delete everything on my hard drive I wouldn't have had to ask that question. ME is not good so I want to go back to using 98 instead. There is something about the dos version that won't let me reinstall windows 98 is what I'm guessing.

Not a good idea.

You would do a lot better to back up your data and then partition and format to remove ME. (I agree it is rubbish.)

Then clean install '98.

If your computer is XP compatible then you might do a lot better to clean install XP, but ONLY if the specification is high enough.

ME

If you put ME on a 4096Mb (4·0Gb) partition and use 512Mb of RAM it will perform reasonably well, but there is a LOT of tuning to do.
