If he has a lot of fonts that can slow it down. Too little RAM is not good either. 256-512Mb is better.

Cleaning the free space on the drive with Eraser helps, as does putting delindex.bat on the C:\ root directory and running it from the DOS prompt: C:\>delindex run

Shutting down find-fast after deleting all indices is good, unchecking "Rearrange my programs so that they start faster" is good too as this process is just a waste of time and has been discredited a long time ago. You should delete the hidden Applog files after doing this as you won't need them anymore.

Cleaning the registry helps immensely. I use RegCleaner 4·3 but you DO have to be VERY careful and make back-ups.

EmpTemp will keep things fairly clean and CCleaner will improve on that. Again care is needed.

After all has been cleaned up, run ScanDisk and defrag. He should be using a defrag.exe from ME as it is faster than the '98 defrag. (Look for newdefrag.exe on the internet, or download Diskeeper Lite so you can see how badly fragmented the drive really is.)

Turn off the Active Desktop, take as many icons as possible off the desktop, use a light wallpaper.

Scan the drive(s) for Trojans with SpyBot SD & AdAware SE, & use SpywareBlaster too.

Take a look to see how many bytes per allocation unit are reported by scandisk. Some '98 installations run better with 8192 bytes per allocation unit.

Ask him to take a good look at msconfig and see if there is anything he doesn't need to run at Start-Up.
