Shutdown Problem?

Windows Me, IE 6.0, AVG Free Virus 6.0 installed

ran AdAware 6.0,spysubtract,spybot,cwshredder and GFI Trojan scan.......

For the last two weeks, even after a restart and running scandisk, I will start surfing, and when I click on a link or program the computer suddenly shuts down and restarts, and runs scandisk.

Some times days will pass without this happening, but usually right in the middle of something important, even with minimal windows open, the computer will suddenly shut down and restart, always when I click on a program or a links.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

I have run a bunch of trojan, adware, and virus checks to no avail.

Thanks,

TxTrapper

You aren't gonna like this but ME is prob the worst OS Microsoft
produced, and that's well known throughout the world. When they made ME they went backwards not forwards. It's notoriously unstable and bug-ridden and Win 98 beats it hands down if your system can't handle XP. Even Microsoft wish they hadn't launched ME, but they were desperate to bring out something new until XP was ready for fear of losing customers to alternatives like Linux or Mac. I was tempted to buy ME cos it was cheap for Win 98 upgraders, but I was appalled by it's flakiness.

Thanks PIP22

I guess it's time to buy a new computer anyway.
However, last night I ran ScanDisk thorough took 12 hours and it hasn't happened "yet", but I know it will.

thanks,

Have you considered heat? If its an old computer, it probably hasn't been cleaned since you bought it? Take the side cover off after you buy a can of canned air. With power on look at all the fans and make sure they are all turning. Take it outside(because of the dust) focus mainly on the processor fan and the heat sync(cooling fins).
Have you updated win me, avg, and spybot,.? If its a Dell,Compaq, etc., go to that site and look for any updates with your product and serial #. Good luck

I think you may have nailed the problem, I contacted AII Computers in my home town and the tech told me the same thing you said above, it was an old Dell 4 years old with Win Me.

It's my spare computer now, I bought a new Dell PowerEdge 400SC Server (barebones) and installed Win XP Pro put in 1GB RAM, Norton System Works and Norton Firewall, AdAware SE, SpyBot and CWShredder no problems now.

Thanks,
