184 asset control

I am posting this for a friend........Win 98 se, Pentium 2 350mhz, 160 meg ram, S3 VGA.......At the startup this message appears....184 Asset control antenna not connected, then a window appears and asks, would you like to configure, if you select ok it takes you to a window similar to a bios setup, if you select exit it goes straight into windows. I added 128 ram to the 32meg that was already installed, would this have anything to do with it?

There are radio-frequency security systems that enable you to remotely access a small EEPROM chip on a PC, even when it is turned off. Typically, a large corporation installs these in its laptops so that security staff can check whether personnel are authorised to take a machine out of the building. It would also be possible to use this technology to prevent a system from booting if it was not in range of the security scanner. I haven’t heard of anyone doing this but your error message certainly has all the right buzzwords. Either your friend has borrowed his PC from work without clearing it with the IT services first or he has bought a dodgy system from a car boot sale. Or else you are just winding me up with made-up error messages!

This sounds logical to me, apparently someone installed a program to have access of his PC, I remember seeing an icon on the desktop, I asked him what it was, he told me that the guy that done his tech stuff installed it, not sure of the name, something like V Sharing? or something like that. Thanks for your help, now I know where to start.

Actually its very easy!

I know this thread is 2 years old but I have seen a number of these second user IBM machines recently all with the 184 Asset Control Arial problem.

I wonder how many have been scrapped based on the lousy advice I've seen in other forums.

This problem arises when a piece of hardware is removed from the RFID socket on the board or riser board.

You dont have to Flash the Bios or flush the EEProm down the tiolet.

Enter the Set UP screens go to "device security" and disable the RFID and Asset Control entries.

Exit and save settings. If you have a Formatted system you might choose to look into the startup menu and configure the Boot Device Order. A number of the machines that have come to me are set for network boot.

Thats it you can boot now or run your OS.

Best of luck.
