Missing Norton VS file

Thought I was having a problem with Windows 98SE, reloaded it but it showed:SYMEVNT.386 not loaded, NAV autoprotect unable to start
I have Norton Systemworks Professional 2003, do I need to uninstall it then reload it? Is it possible there is a virus even though I ran Housecall and it did not show anything.
I ran the online update, did not show any problems. totally confused.

you should be able to uninstall norton, then reinstall to fix the problem. a bit of info about the SYMEVNT can be found on THIS link, sorry if you got the other one.

Thanks, I hated to hear that I had to remove/reinstall Norton but when I looked at the instructions for adding the file, worried I would do an oops. I had a similar error back in August and I had no idea it was Norton, I ended using the recovery disks - a real big mistake. Later today I will remove and reinstall. thanks so much for your help and the link Hope I don't run into problems. Will I lose the files in the recycle bin?? this should not be a concern except you never know.

usually when you uninstall norton system works it will warn you that you have files in the protected recycle bin and prompt you to save or delete them. with it not working correctly i am not sure what will happen. i would suggest if you want the files in the recycle bin, restore them and move them to a folder until you are sorted out.

You are not going to believe this but, I did a find file, (the SYMEVNT.386), there are 2 files shown

C:\WINDOWS\System 122Kb
C:\ProgramFiles\Symantec 122KB

Do you think I should just uninstall and reinstall anyway as it is not recognizing them?

Is it possible as its close to my subscription date, they could have disabled my files? Just a thought.

the subscription date shouldnt matter, the program should keep working, just will not update anymore.
reinstalling the program would probably be the easiest way to make sure the program is correctly installed.
