windows wont run .exe files

Windows 98 will not run any programs . All shortcut icons have the same picture. Nothing in the control panel will open up at all. The search tool does not work. Basically nothing in my entire computer will open up right if it is a program. Please help!

someone had seemingly the same problem on windows xp, i tried that solution, as below

Solution 1:

Click Start, Run and type Command
Type the following and then press Enter after typing each one:

cd\windows
copy regedit.exe regedit.com
start regedit.com [or regedit.com]

Navigate to and select the following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command

Double-click the (Default) value in the right pane.
Delete the current value data, and then type: "%1" %* [with quotes]
(ie., quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk.)
Exit the Registry Editor and restart Windows.

i'm runnning windows 98 home. I looked here but windows 98 does not have the complete path

shell\open\command is missing. any ideas?

Are you running any spyware protection? Maybe you have a bug.
If running spybot s&D did you dowload the patch?
