modem not recognized/wrong port!

I recently installed Windows 98SE on a 2nd hard drive and no matter what I do, my OS refuses to recognize my modem. It's not the modem, it works fine with Windows XP. I had this problem in the past, but the CompuServe setup used to fix this, but I am not with CS anymore. I have removed and replaced the modem many times, but Windows 98SE doesn't like it. The modem used to operate on Port 5 in prior 98SE installations, but when I use ADD HARDWARE, Windows 98SE only searches Port 1 and 2, where the modem ain't. Since installing 98SE, I keep getting the message that the "PCI SERIAL CONTROLLER" driver isn't installed. It's not on the OS disk and not on the SOYO installation disk. Where could I find it? Could this malfunctioning controller be causing the trouble?

there could be many things wrong
try going to the manufactures website, and getting the newest drivers.
or try going to, start, control panel, add hardware, and add another port, keep on installing the ports until you get to port 5 to where you said it worked before, and simply un-install ports 3 and 4 which are not needed.
when you are installing the ports, it will ask you to re-boot the computer, go through with it, and repeat the process until you get to port 5, then try installing the drivers there
Ill check elsewhere for this problem. I had the exact same problem with my win98SE, until i upgraded to XP.
good luck

Check your Bios to make sure that PNP is enabled. My problem was everytime I turned off the PC it went to a port that the mouse was using and the modem could not work. Once I enabled PNP there was no problem.
Went into Bios and enabled PNP.
Restarted my PC
Went to Systyem and uninstalled the modem and then went to install new hardware and let them find it.
I then restarted my PC and everything was fine.

Gave up on modem and Win98se!

The only reason I installed Win 98se on my second disk was to play older flight sims such as Combat Flight Simulator. Windows XP didn't like CFS at first, but now it functions beautifully. I keep the second disk in reserve with Windows XP installed on it! Thanks for your input!
