Question modem crashes computer

I have been working on a customer's computer for a while. Originally all that was needed was to clear an error up. But when I went to test to make sure that his machine was functioning properly, I found that I couldn't get the modem to work. Before I installed the most recent Conexant HSF modem drivers, I would get an error 630. Also, I was unable to get any response when checking the initialization strings with the More Info button in the Modems Control Panel. With both a brand new modem and the one he had in there. Then after updating the drivers I can get information from the Control Panel, but when I try to use Dial-Up Networking, the computer will either hang or restart. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Dial-Up Networking as well as replacing the Winsock2 file with a clean version. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

things i would try would be:
pull out the modem, boot up go to the control panel then the modem icon and remove it because it will still be shown but as (not present) would also remove any other modem listed.
then i would try the modem on a different pci or isa slot.
if you still get the error and you have a 98 disk handy, install 98 over it's self without formatting. you dont have to reinstall nothing on 98 when you do this, it just repairs it's self.
if it is still having the trouble you may have a irq conflict and have to see what all in on the same irq with the modem.

now I've got a fatal exception error

The error I'm getting is:

"A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C17D3827 in VXD BASIC2(01) + 000076C7. The current application will be terminated."

I get this when trying to dial out now. I have tried the different slots already and I did just try to reinstall Win98SE. I'm not quite sure how I can change the IRQ. It's a plug&play PCI card and there are no options for IRQs in the BIOS, since it's a Compaq Presario. In Windows I am unable to change the IRQ unless in safe mode, which I did try but I haven't checked to see if it worked. That could be why I started to get this error. I moved the enumerator to IRQ 3. Any ideas???

i would change the irq back since it is a compaq, is there anything else installed on the pci bus video card/sound card/ or any other hardware added? some people add pci video cards and they hog the bus on some of the older pos computers causing errors.

just curious, have you done a good spyware scan and on-line virus scan? and did you do a msconfig or other startup tweak and remove startup items, alot of dial up modems have to have their startup programs to work correctly like us robotics.

What I've found

So far I have taken that back to automatic configuration. The only product that I can think of that is on the same IRQ as the PCI Modem Enumerator is the ATI Rage video, but the video and audio are onboard. The original modem that was in the PC is a CIS Technology Series M1-5614PM3A High Speed Fax Modem. There is no way to reconfigure the BIOS and I can't even remember how I changed the IRQ on that before. I don't believe that it has any startup software, it's the generic driver, which is what shipped with it anyway. I just got the updated one since there is no brand name on the card. It puts the enumerator on IRQ 11. I did run a spyware and virus scan. Removed the spyware but there were no virus. I don't know what else to look for. If you have any other ideas I'm open to them. Thank you very much for your help.

i had the same thing happen to me a while back, it was a AT computer built by some computer shop using a asus clone board and it had a modem problem. i worked on it for days trying everything i could imagine then i dug out a old isa modem and poped it in a isa slot(it had both) and for some reason it would not use a pci modem correctly. i can still hear that old womans voice saying" it worked before" 300 times while i was trying to explain the problem to her. i mean i really did try everything formatted and reinstalled, there was not support for the board so no bios updates....but other then that i tried chipset drivers, firmware..........
