Unhappy Won't boot - missing DLL

Have an old 266 mz which was upgraded from W95 to W98 some time ago. Somehow MSVCRT.DLL was deleted and machine will no longer boot giving a Windows Must Be Reinstalled message instead. Problem is, machine will not boot from the CD-ROM (tried changing the BIOS) and will not recognize the CD-ROM from the command prompt. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. I did this once a long time ago but can't seem to remember how. Thanks!

If you don't have a boot diskette, check with a friend. Any 98 boot diskette should get you to the point to read from the cdrom.

Thanks... tried that. I think the problem is the CD drive is actually a DVD upgrade and the standard CD ROM drivers aren't recognizing it. I guess I'm looking for a generic CD/DVD Driver to add to the boot disk. Any other suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Are your BIOS able to see your CD-Drive?

Yes, I've set the BIOS to boot from CD-ROM and changed it back and forth to boot from a floppy. The setting is in the BIOS, assume it can see it.

See if any of the boot disk files on www.bootdisk.com include the drivers you need.

Thanks for the link. I discovered the problem is that the CD-ROM is connected via cable to the sound card, and is a known issue with the standard MS95 and 98 CD-ROM drivers on the start up disks. Just found the specific driver (BCD F563E) for the CD-ROM and it included a batch file. Hopefully it will run from from the floppy and get that CD-ROM going so I can reinstall windows. Thanks again, but if anyone knows anything about this issue I'd appreciate any more suggestions.

Nope... I'm screwed unless someone can point me to a Windows 98/95 startup disk that has CD-ROM support for an idiotic Dell configured CD-ROM (BCD F563E) that cables to a sound card. The standard Windows drivers won't work. This was a common problem a while back, but with XP around, I guess there's not much attention paid to it anymore. BTW... it's a Dell Dimension XPS H266.
