Having problems upgrading windows XP

I currently have Windows 98 second edition and I bought Windows XP home edition upgrade. Now I put the cd in and blah blah and the little thing come up and says "What Do You Want To Do" and then it has "Install Windows XP" "Perform Additional Tasks" and "Check System Compatibiliy" ok.. I went to Check System Compatibiliy and went to Check System Compatibiliy Automatically then it came up with the box that says

"Some Setup files might of been updated since you last purchased your Copy of Windows XP

To make sure that you updated files, Setup can use your internet connection to use Microsoft Website.

This requires the temporary collection of some information about your computer hardware. No personal Information will be collected."

Then it has Yes, Download the updated Setup Files (Reccomended) and No, Skip this step and continue installing windows.

So i went to the first one and when it gets done downloading and stuff a error comes up and says

"Setup cannot continue. Contact Microsoft Technical Support. (Error: 578FF58h)

And I don't know what to do.. So if someone could help I would really appreciate it!

Skip updating them, as you can do that later.

When I "upgraded" to XP I dound the only way to get it right was a full format in spite of what MS tells you.

It can be upgraded without a format...but formatting is much better. The loss of information sucks though.
