assuming the drive motor, belt or gear that runs the door isnt bad, the only time i have seen what you talk about is on compaq computers a few years ago, the lite-on cd drive door would not open after you put a disk in...the only way to get the disk out was reboot and open the door before windows loaded. there was a firmware update that resolved it. you will have to look up your drive to see if this is a issue.

could be, guess one of us should explain, on the front of the cd drive there is a very small hole, if you straighten a paper clip or use something the size of one, push it straight in and it will open the drive door.........unless you have a HP or other computer with the front cover blocking the hole, then you have to remove the front of the pc to get to it.

CDD 4801

I am having the same problem. I have a Compaq computer, and the door won't budge. I've removed the front cover and the CD drive. Now that I've read about the paperclip hole, I'm trying that... Well, there is sort of a hole slightly left of center below the door, but jamming a paperclip into it doesn't seem to do anything. We had brought the CD drive to Radio Shack, where they mentioned that ours didn't seem to have this hole, so maybe the hole I found isn't the "right" hole?

It's possible! How old is the drive? You may be as well off to just buy a new one and gain the benefits of a higher sampling ratio.
32X as compared to 52X as an example if yours is a few years old.
The price of a new one is quite reasonable these days.

It's about 3 years old. I'm just visiting, so I don't know its history, just that the button to get it open was apparently difficult from the get-go. I may just get them a new one. My Mom and husband are in their 60's and aren't likely to do much with it, though they have need for it occasionally (actually just possibly this once to install some software.) ugh. I wish it could work just a few more times.

Well, I got a Sony. And the door opens! So I'm happy now. Thanks.
