And Suddenly....... No Sound!!

My computer was working fine (as usual) until today when I turned it on and no 'windows' startup sound occured.
When thinking this a bit strange I checked the CD Player out and found it to Play but no sound.
Same on evrything that usually carries sound.

I checked my sound card in Control panel and it says that it has been disabled!
It cannot be enabled because Windows has disabled it.

....... So why has Windows decided this action
....... And how do I overide it to get sound again?

Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks

I would try uninstalling the card and then restarting and re-installing. You may have to resupply the correct drivers.
uninstall from "Device manager".

Thanks Doc
uninstalled from device manager and restarted.... windows then found new hardware and installed it.... BUT stil no sound on windows start up or from anything else that uses it (have tried updating driver)

On the sound card device manager properties it still says:
This device is disabled (code22)
You can't enable this device because it has been disabled by a Windows driver

still dont know why it has suddenly done this and why doesnt the so called Windows driver play sound (if it thinks it knows better)?

cheers stephen

Had a nose at codes info, cheers.

A perculiar finding though:
In these codes it blames a user for disabling:

This device is disabled (code22)
The device is disabled because a user disabled it using Device Manager.
Click Enable Device, which starts the Enable Device wizard.

On my computer it blames a windows driver for disabling and says I cannot enable!

where can i type in an instruction to my computer along the lines of:
Find pesky windows driver and destroy then enable my driver, which was fine, and return my computer to the set that i liked (and worked) before windows interfered!

cheers

Actually.... I wonder.....
my computer hasnt worked normally over the past few months as every time it starts up it says it wasnt shut down properly and goes through a 'check the drive thing'.......... which has no bad sections.

could this be part of the spreading prob?

They are good tools............. when working!

cheers

is it a sound card, or on-board sound ?and have you added any other hardware lately? on the 9X systems sometimes you get a IRQ conflict...if you load the default bios settings it may fix you up. or you will have to see what all is on what irq. driver updates, and software can cause hardware to malfunction.....assuming your sound card is good???????????????

It is a separate sound card:
CMI 8738 / C3DX PCI Audio Device

Have not added any new hardware. Only thing new was to set the tv channels in my wintv card that has always been in the computer.... that was easy and worked without a hitch.

only since turning on last time has the sound gone..... no vol control anywhere either.

Never played with the BIOS before... or know where to go to reset default.

i would think if the only difference was that you setup the channels....the sound card and the tv card may be on the same irq....conflict being both are loading up on the irq now, when it wasnt a issue before you enabled some new features.
to save myself from typing a book, i will get a link that has everything you need to know.

I do like the title 'computerhope', it sounds as reassuring as could be, thanks.

I have solved the puzzle... dont know what caused it (still) but heres what I did.

Removed the soundcard in 'add/remove programs' (that was mentioned before) but heres the extra bit that someone thought of down the pub!
After removing sound card software, then reboot in 'Safe Mode' and go through to 'Device Manager' and delete anything to do with the card in 'Sound,Video&GameControllers'. Then reboot in normal and reinstal the drivers to the 'New Hardware found'.

This was done and now my computer makes Noises again. Just in time to watch (and listen) to Fist Full of Dollars!

Thanks for all thoughts. I appreciate the time and knowledge very much
Kind Regards
Stephen
