protection error

i was getting the following message on startup:
whilst initializing device vkd - windows protection error. ive changed the keyboard. the message has gone away but i cant get into windows. the machine comes up with command prompt only highlighted - when i accept and try to run scanreg from c:\ it just hangs. cant log in safemode. its locked me out! help

so...all this trouble started when you got a new keyboard? or what?

Well i say if u can't fix the problem, then just reinstall windows.
Doesn't always work so use it only if u have 2.

Have you tried using but another keyboard? Windows 98 can be a pain with keyboard settings. I've seen that OS bomb for less. I would try and new keyboard or a System Restore.
