my ME freezes

My machine would freeze about Five minutes after it's booted up. I really don't know what's going on. I was suspecting it had something to do with my RAM chip, I had tried one by one (SDRAM, 64M each) to boot, but still freeze at anyone of them. So it shouldn't be the RAM chip. Anyone out there know what the cause would be, please give me a shout! I have tons of data that didn't get backed up!

And, if i reinstall ME, is there anyway that i can preserve my personal data?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Windows ME can be pretty flakey, you can reinstall the OS over the old one without losing your data i belive.. you may want to google on how to do a repair install.

As for hardware, it could be a heat problem of some kind..make sure your CPU fan and other fans in the computer are all spinning at a good clip..and that the heat sink and fans are not all gummed up with dust and dirt..(specially if you smoke cigars, that wreaks heck on computers gizzards.. real gummy stuff.)

But hopefully that helps you. :-)

Thanks for the reply.

Good idea to check with the Fan. I've had my machine for a long while, but never had cleaned the fan.

On the side note, I did a little googling as suggested, and found this link, it might help somebody like me.
