Windows 98 Upgrade

I have a computer with Windoes 98 on it. I also have a Windows 98 upgrade cd. I think it for Windows ME to Windows 98, but I don't know if such a thing exists, it might just be the Windows 98 upgrade.

Question is - can I use this on the computer that has Windows 98 on it to clean that computer out (like a full installation) ?

If I put the CD in and begin the process, will I be able to tell why kind of upgrade it is doing ? Will anything begin before I cancel that will mess up the computer ?

Thanks!
NYF

Usually, an upgrade cd should tell you what it is going to install before the actual installation process begins. So if you have Windows 98 installed and the upgrade cd is upgrading to Windows 98 Second Edition then you would get some information on that matter in one of the steps preceding the actual upgrading process of copying new files and/or modifying system settings. However if you don't get such information (what are you upgrading to) at the begining of the upgrade process I suggest that you do not continue. Hope this helps.

Good Luck

Thanks. Maybe I'll give it a shot. The thing is, a while back I was trying to clean up a PC with Windows ME on it, and someone gave me this Windows 98 upgrade CD. So, I don't have any documentation with it. That is why I thought it was just a Windows ME to Windows 98 upgrade. I tried the upgrade, and it bombed-out mid-way through.

Now, I have thie Winodws 98 PC that is running real slow, and since this was the only CD I had, I was hoping it would install, and clean everything out. I think the pc already has Windows 98 Second Edition.

Thanks!

You cannot 'Upgrade' from ME to W98.

The disk you have is either a Win98 Upgrade or a Win98 Second Edition upgrade. In both cases you can only upgrade from Win 95 and possibly Win 3x.

In all these upgrades you need a qualifying product, for Win 95 either the OS loaded onto your HDD or a CD.

Win98SE

I agree, don't do it!
It seems odd that you have a CD and don't k ow what's on it - sounds like a copy- or worse.
If you are disatisfied with Windows ME (which came after Win98SE but was not much of an improvement , some say)... then Win98SE CD's are available at computer fairs for not much money. Considering the technology on the disc it's good value - and I'm still using win98SE - only Photoshop "Elements" I can't run, as these need XP. However, as I use PaintShopPro v7 - it's got all the destructive power you need and runs just fine.

If your PC is running slow, maybe a virus - or your HDD is nearly full, causing Swapfile problems - and Windows does like plenty of spare space to run about. May be worth clearing out "history files" and that wretched "recycle bin" these get clogged up over time and can slow things, I'm led to believe.

So, Why not treat yourself to a new $50 HDD and a copy of Win98SE?
Cheap at the price and no risk to your existing settings. You can revert to your old PC whenever you want (just run the set-up BIOS to alter the HDD capacity).
If in doubt - DON'T.
Regards
