Having trouble with a low-res minicam given recently, with ULead 4.0 SE software.
Sorry but this area is not at all clear, to me.
Problem seems to be the Instructions don't follow what happens when installing the CD-software (ULead 4.0SE =photo manipulation). It suggests the driver will be installed at the end yet it doesn't appear to - what I'd like is to know the correct method of getting a suitable driver - I tried the standard Kodak and one from Fuji ( but couldn't get them into my system) so I'm wondering if the USB connections are a little tricky.
Is there somewhere where there is a list of my USB drivers (ie any on my PC) waiting to detect the "right" device?
The Win98se CD is particularly unhelpful and suggests that the USB driver is used to ( well, "drive") which is about as useless as I could wish for.
The camera is a low res device but I thought it would be useful for web-snaps.
I've had this PC working with a quality Digital camera but that has gone. and I don't recall seeing that USB driver installed although I suppose there somewhere as I didn't delete.
Are all Win98se USB drivers device-specific, so there can't be one for a bog-standard camera?

yes all drivers are device-specific
I think you need to install the driver manually.
1. first is the usb driver for the cam on the CD, browse the cd. If not in the cd you need to download it, try the manufacture's webpage or a search engine (use the mame and model).
2. unistall ULead software
3. plug the mini cam, windows should detect the device and the new hardware wizard will open, just follow the on-sreen instructions, but when it asks for the driver location tell it were it is located on the CD or in your pc , this for the downloaded driver.
4. when it is all done windows will tell you the name of the device you have installed.
5. install your photo manipulation software.
I think this will fix your problem, but try to find an updated driver for your device.

You're right that's what I need, though there is no "Manufacturer" and the only offer of a driver is "Tom" who seems to recognise the camera, so I'm likely to use whatever he's got (after a scan). I was wondering if anyone here had similar problems with ULead ( they won't help ) as it seemed to me that if they supply the usb-driver for many hundreds of cameras (their words),on their CD it is possible they will get mixed-up. I suggested they should keep an area aside for copies of these drivers thereby avoiding disgruntled customers. Several "cameras" have gone out of business, so if you delete the driver and lose/scratch the CD ( Nightmare!). Anyway, I guessed there was little chance of success and the camera is "probably" pretty poor anyway - but worth an ask, eh?

Most digital cameras are USB2.0, as well these are only backward compatible to USB1.1. If your computer has only USB1.0, then things just do not work! If this is your problem, then install a USB1.1 or USB2.0 PCI card..but first check your Mobo for compatibility..some old boards do not like USB2.0 cards.

If all of this OK, then the suggested method of re-installing should be done!
If you cannot find a suitable driver, go to Driverdownload.com.

Suggestion for the "Shutdown problem", go to Start/Run, type in SFC...this is a system file checking program in Win98SE, it may ask you to insert your CD!

Hi, I'm running 98SE in about 5 computers with no real problems with all types of USB devices. Have you checked in Control Panel, System, System Manager, USB. You can't always beleive it if it says everything is OK, but it may give you a hint as to what is wrong. If it's there, it wouln't hurt to delete it and reboot. Windoze just may set it up correctly on the reboot. Hope this helps, Jim

Perhaps I've misled you, but thanks for the reply. The camera is quite old (for a digital) and is USB 1* not the more-recent usb-2. Also the software is quite old - being designed for WIN98SE, so probably six years ago.

I have had some success using a set of files from Ben (sorry Ben, can't remember precise details)--he e-mailed some files and these were installed - as usual they just sat there with no sign of life - so a further email established the "trigger" to nudge them into operation. At one point I downloaded some pictures, but the camera/software is less than helpful and I think I'd be better with a web-cam and a long lead!
The camera has worked as a web-cam but after some time I seem to have lost the magic command.

I suspect this camera always was a bad bit of kit and don't propose using more time on it. The alternative (which I still use) is to have a CD created from a 35mm film (when it's processed). This is a relatively low-cost solution (although somewhat delayed compared with Digital Camera)...the prime purpose is to give me resources in Digital form which I can use with PC Software to "improve" the image.
