Unable to install new hardware, missing dll

I am try to install an ethernet card and a cable modem but am unable to. During the driver installation a message appears to load Windows98 cd because of a missing file on my computer, which I did. The file was not even found on my cd. It says that a dll file is missing. So I go online and download that dll file. When I try the install process again it says another dll file is missing so I download that one from the internet. Then the same thing happens again and I download that dll. It seems like I'm downloading one dll after another and I currently have dail up and its taking forever. Does anyone have any advice? It would be greatly appreciated. Is there a way to download all missing dlls at once so I do not have to abort my installation everytime?

Have a look here, the System File Check may be the way to go http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;185836
