Error Installing XP on ME
Okay, I got this computer that had Windows ME and my friend said he would install his Windows XP Professional on it, so he tried to install it and he effed things up pretty bad, now when I boot the computer it will start to load up then when it gets to the part were it says Windows XP Professional with the black backround and stuff then it just restarts. After the restart it goes in an endless loop of this, so in the middle of this I popped in the recovery CD that came with my Windows ME and then it says

Just like to add, irrespective of what OS is already installed, it's always the best policy to wipe it and install xp on to a clean partition. Much better for stability and keeping problems to a minimum. Oh, and what you are doing strikes me as being illegal. You must not install Windows from a CD belonging to someone else -- you are supposed to buy your own!

yes pip22 is right what he has done is piracy i should of picked that up, so because of him being cleaver is going to now cost you. Piracy is illegal dont do it.
You see what can happen is if you went to regisiter it microsoft would come back and not only tell you the product key was illegal, they could even shut your friends computer down as well. why did not someone pick this up when this was first posted, i for one don,t help people with cloned xp on their computer, you see i do other work for microsoft here in uk, stopping piracy. so well done to pip22

Well this is kinda comlicated and I'm pretty sure that it is legal, my friend has gotten a new computer with a new Windows XP so I asked him if he could just install his old Windows XP on my Windows ME (this is where the problem occured) and since his old computer is beyond repair (reason why he got a new computer) and will never be used again i firgured that it will be legal because only one copy of the Windows XP will be in use.

ok thanks for explaining the reason right if you have the disk, yes you can installit but you have to phone customer services at microsoft and tell them and they will reg it to you.
Right other problem is you have to insert the xp disk let it format your hard drive and do a fresh reinstall on to your computer, if its asks do you want to use NTFS or FAT32 if you have cleared everything from your drive then use NTFS. iF NOT USE fAT 32 then convert.
Keep me informed how you get on, sorry about earlier but i work for microsoft in uk but under usa office.

Alright, but in your earlier post you said Windows ME is not upgradable; so should I go on installing Windows XP or should I go back to ME?

IF YOU HAVE DISK then install xp pro but you will have to let it format your hard drive it will ask you do you want to use a different partition or go over what you have ,let it go over what you have and then follow insructions, and you should find you have a clean windows xp Pro which will work on your computer. if for some reason it does not then reinstall me but me is being finished next year when longhorn comes in xp is more stable to run. so if it was me i would do the xp.

Alright, I've got windows XP running on the computer but it is very slow, I'm thinking its because when I check my compatibility it says "not compatibal" So I want to get my Windows ME back onto the computer, how would I go about doing this?

before you uninstall xp pro how much of the following have you on your computer.
a 233 mhz processor from the Intel Pentium/ Celeron Family or the AMD K6/AthloN/Duron
64 MB of Ram: 1.5 GB of available disk space; and video adapter or graphics capable of Super VGA (800 x600) resolutions. the recommend configuration is at least a 300 MHz CPU with 128 MD OF Ram. if you have that or more then the reason XP pro is running slow is because you now have to do a disk clean up and a defrag.
THE compatibility means run a test to see if there is available new drivers for your motherboard and also how much memory is left.
If you dont feel you can do the above then all you do is insert you ME disk and it should do the same as windows pro remember to do a format first.

put disk in as normal and do as you have been doing, when it comes to install on the partition you want ,it will tell you it will have to do a format click enter and it will reformat your drive then download new files, and carry on putting windows back on for you.
