Song keeps repeating and I can't hear any music

Hi, my system has Windows 98 installed and always, when I start, the ''log in'' song for windows 98 plays but keeps repeating. I mean, the star of the song keeps repeating over and over and never ends. So when I try to listen to music, I can't because I get a message that says that the device is being used by another program or something. Please help me! ;_;

Have you tried running SFC from the 'Run' option. This prog will check your 'System Files' to see if any are corrupted, if they are you will need the Win98 CD to extract the replacement files.

Hi, Go into Control Panel, Sound and change to another sound. If that works then follow Tubby's advice and watch for the sound that gave you problems. System File Checker will retreive it from the 98 Install disk for you, System File Checker is in System Tools, System Info, Tools, System Files Checker. Jim

In that case - have you tried setting the startup tune to another one - you do have a choice of sounds (only until you can either download an uncorrupted copy from the Internet - or someone elses PC). If you still have the same problem then your problem lies deeper. Something has put it on a loop, and if it isn't a virus you are going to have to peruse some of your 'RUN' commands in the Registry and the file 'system,ini'.

Come to think of it - what sort of response do you get when you set the sound to 'none' in Control Panel?
