External Hard disk problem

Hello All,
I've just bought a new external hard disk of size 40GB... but I had a problem when connecting it to work with windows ME. When I plug it the plug and play starts installing the necessary drives and in the middle of that, an error occurs and I receive and error msg that asks me to "End Program" or "Debug". When I tried the HD on another machine running Windows XP, It worked JUST PERFECT and I knew that the file system is NTFS... So, is this the reason of the problem... plz tell me what to do... THANKS
