Please help, I am about to do serious damage to one Toshiba Sattelite 1605CDS, running on Win 98. I was surfing and an error message came up. The usual windows box with This programme has performed an illegal operationand will shut down. When I press the close box, the opening box for MacAffee Anti virus starts up and runs. When I click on this to remove it the boxes mostly disappear but a part of the desktop page stays in place and everything freezes. I can't get it to run after several tries at complete closedown. I cannot access through windows explorer, though I can seem to get into setup. A geekie friend tells me I need to reformat the hard disk and reload. This sounds drastic. I'm using a mouse with cable and have not yet tried without this.

Try booting-up in safemode (ie: keep tapping the F8 key while booting up) then select safe mode. once you are in safe mode run SFC. This will check your system files. you'll need a Win98 CD to extract replacement files to replace the files that are corrupted

An unwelcome visitor perhaps? The appearance of your AV would seem to suggest the possibility.

Try safe mode as suggested and scan the system. possibly this won't work but it's as good a start as any.
