Installing Windows XP on Windows 98SE

Hey everyone, I have a windows 98 se computer that is not and will not be hooked up to the internet. I would like to install windows xp home edition on it, but I want to use the windows xp CD we already have. I'm not sure if this would work though, since that copy of XP has already been registered online. But I was thinking since my computer is not connected to the Internet, that maybe that wouldn't cause and registration problems. Another thing though, that might cause a problem is I don't have the windows 98 CD since this computer was given to me from a relative. Can I uninstall 98 without the CD? So if anyone knows anything that would help, I'd greatly appreciate hearing it.

Alyssa

I doubt that you are going to be able to do this canuck_gurl22.
When you installed XP on the other computer a record was taken of all the Hardware on that computer. That product code was then locked to that computer so that you couldn't install it on another machine. It's one copy of XP for one computer only I'm afraid

You would have been able to uninstall 98 without a problem. XP would have asked you if you wanted 98 removing during the set-up process.

Not true you can register as many copies as you want with a computer in fact i have windows XP pro and i have another computer with windowx xp pro and only one serial and they both have access to the net.

However you will need to do a fdisk to delete the master boot record and you if you wanna do a clean install of XP its not all easy if your new to this type of stuff deleting the master boot record then you will need to create a new partition and if you do go off and do that you still need to have a backup of all your drivers like audio, graphic card, modem ect... i guess if you know how to do that or know someone who does then you can use that windows XP serial as many times as you want.
