upgrading...?

I have just got hold of a pc (gateway G6-350)which i want to upgrade.
id like to upgrade from windows98 to xp and upgrade the processor from the pentium2.plus i want to incfrease the memory.
id also like to add another internal harddrive and more usb ports.

how difficult will this be? the usb ports i can do easily but what about the other bits? is upgrading the procesor a case of buying a new one and attaching it in place of the old one? and if i buy a xp disc or even one from ebay what are the chances itw ill work and be straight forward to install?

also id like to add another monitoor and have dual screens (this pc is intended for design use)
thanks

So you want to upgrade to XP and need to buy a copy.
Want to up the memory
Want a new processor
Want a bigger drive.

Well to tell ya the truth I think your best bet is to donate that PC or just toss it. Its going to cost ya more then a entry level PC.
You can get a pretty descent PC that will beat the snots out of that P2 system for about $300 with XP included.

When you say design use, you mean CAD programs, 3D, Photoshop?
If that is the case, the machine is simply not up to the task. It supports 384 Megs of ram max. The standard ram is 32 Megs. You will need to max the ram and processor to get anything like a viable computer for such use.
The processor, even if maxed out will be what.... 500 Mhz P2? The machine will struggle to run XP alone at a decent speed.

It will work, but you will endure much waiting for tasks to finish. This will be compounded by slow HD access.

If determined to go ahead, use win 2000. This has much lower machine requirements to run. It can be installed on a P1 133 for example, though 64 megs of ram will still be required. (better 128)
