Display settings undoing themselves..

Just fixed my moms computer again for teh same issue. Its an older Compaq Presario 5150 (AMD 350mhz) with onboard ATI Rage video running 98 (not 98SE). This was my old PC before I started building my own and I gave it to them.

Recently its been going from the 800X600 True Color display settings down to 16 color, 640X400 settings for no reason. Reset it to where it should be and a couple days later I get a call that "its done it again". It seems to go in spurts. Couple months runs fine without issues and then for a week or two it does this. It did this to me a few times when I had it.

I downloaded a driver for the monitor and did an update on it. I dont know if this cured it, but will find out within a week or two if it did it again.

Any other ideas if this happens again to them?

Instead of monitor drivers, download and install the latest drivers for the video card. Display changes like the ones you're experiencing are usually a problem with video card drivers.

It can also be caused by older and/or poorly written games that require the lower resolution and color settings to run but fail to return things back to your settings when the game is shut down. The only cure I've found for that is either quit playing that game or learn how to put the display settings back after the game is shut down.
