adding an external hard drive in win98

i know that in enabling the computer to recognise and show that there is an external hdd attached and allowing me to access it i must format it etc and go thru printers+hardware in control panel, but what is the equivelant of this in win98? there isnt a printers+hardware option available here.

There's an "Add New hardware wizard" in control panel if memory serves me correctly.
However, you shouldn't need to use it. if the drive is connected via USB, is formatted, and the supplied driver is first installed before attaching the drive, Windows should detect it and set it up automatically.

Hi, Some USB devices are not handled by 98, but have to have a driver from the manufacturer to operate. Some come with the device, some have a note telling you where to get it. Some tell you nothing. Check the manufacturer's web site and see if they have a 98 driver. Luck, Jim
