Outlook Express - reloading

Pentium/Win98SE/IE5
I've had problems this week since I Defraged my HDD in "safemode" - I cannot get OutlookExpress (v5.5 I think) to recognise my password and server, so no e-mails (son't suppose I can send any eirther as I cant get any connection).
(I can get my emails via WebMail so my ISP is coninced the e-mails are there to be read, it's just that hey are in HTML and difficult to read, so I'd prefet to continue with OE5 and ZoneAlarm which has been fine for some years now.
OE5 msg suggests it might be a long period of inactivity etc, but I've spoken to my ISP and they said 1) there were too many msgs on the Server, (so I deleted about 80% - it didn't resolve the access problem)
/
Before ringing Microsoft (which will give me hours of music and sales messages, ......only to tell me to reset everything AND reinstall Windows or "buy XP and update to OE6"-Grr) - I thought I'd ask the wisdom of Folk here:
How do I remove IE5 and re-install it (alone)from my Win98SE CD?
/
In the past if I've reinstalled Windows it's been the "whole thing" so I've never learnt about the individual "parts"
Clearly I don't want to reinstall the whole of Windows - UGH!
So I'm hooing I could just do the IE5 bit.........
..............
However, maybe this OE-access is a common-enough problem and it's in the Registry, (or somewhere?) and this would avoid having the tedium of reinstalling all those account details POP3 and other confusing data.
.......
My ISP has been through the settings in IE5 and set-up a single account to collect all e-mails but the problem of getting OE5 to connect to the Server persists.
//
I use ZoneAlarm, but this appears to be operating as usual and it is asking (correctly) for permission. Kapasky is also getting in on the act. All very odd.

Hi harry12

If you want reinstall Outlook Express5 alone try this.

First go to the Add/Remove Programs.
Locate "Microsoft Outlook Express 5" (if it is in the list)
Double click on it and click YES to continue with removal.
Restart when prompted.

To reinstall OE do this.
In the Control Panel open Add/Remove Programs.
In Add/Remove Programs click the "Windows Setup" tab.
In Windows Setup scroll down to Outlook Express, check the box
and click Apply.
You might be prompted for the 98CD if the 98 cab files are not on the hard drive.

OE - thanks

[quote=Nesbit]Hi harry12
Many thanks Nesbit, I wonder why this isn't stated in the Help files - they seem to miss obvious tasks (like in when things stop working) and want to make life difficult by changing the toolbars, fiddling with lists or forms - when most folk just want an easy life. Whenever did slide-rules come with run-on transfers (new scales anyone?)
/
I part-resolved the problem by phoning my ISP and reloading all the settings - it would appear there was at least one thing wrong with POP or SMTP or something else that most people would rather wasn't there. Needless to say my outgoing emails now still don't work correctly, due to a poor setting-up -( ie easily fixed in time) - but I can receive.

My ISP blamed IE5 for refusing to download - aparently, when the server is too full with my undeleted messages it refuses to respond (what a clever design, eh?) - you'd think it would send out a code that said "Server is full, delete excess using Webmail.com" that would be easy enough - but to tell me it has disconnected for one of several reasons (all wrong) is not very helpful.
My thanks to others who suggested Mozilla as an alternative.
