Need scanning software help
While on the internet last night. My computer caught something. I am using AVG Free which kept saying I had a virus. I could not clean, I could not delete, I could not move infected file to vault. AVG Free would not do anything except detect it. I then went to Panda Softwares sight and ran their on-line scanner. It found 35 viruses and deleted them and 1 spyware and 1 dialer. Not removed. I then tried running Ad-Aware, found nothing. Tried Spy-bot, found nothing. Then Spyware Remover which found 3 items and said it removed them.
Any other freeware I can try to use to see if I got everything? Just downloaded CW Shredder. I'll give that a try tonight.
Using Windows 98 SE on this computer.
Thanks for the help.

You could try spywareblaster which is a free program and works real time to prevent spyware from getting onto computer in the first place - dunno if it works with win 98.
Good luck,
Paul.

For a spyware check, try Spy Audit by Webroot Spy Sweeper. It's a free online scanner. You do have to download it.

And to clarify the statement to the post above, Spywareblaster does work on win98SE. I have it on my win98se. They also have a free trial version of Spy Sweeper. Detects and removes, but doesn't detect as much stuff as the paid for version as you only get one update for the detection definitions.

Other ways to remove a virus
Try to start your computer in Safe Mode and then run a virus scan and try to clean it in Safe Mode. If this doesn't help, find the name of the virus and visit McAfee or Norton Virus website and get information about the virus, sometimes they might need to to perform a task to get the virus to remove.

Try AntiVir Personal Edition and another good one is Spybot Search & Destroy. A good firewall is Sygate Firewall Personal Edition. All free. Good luck

spybot search and destroy not
spybot search and destroy not. its been a long time since spybot was able to search and destroy anything, unless they have resently majorly overhauled it.it's way out of date.rated number 10 out of 15. at least adaware was number 6 and its getting old too.

also which version of AVG are you using should be number 7. As they dropped support of 6 around 1-05. as it is now dead.

I've been using Spybot for a few years now and it's been ok. You would be hard pressed to find an anti-malware site that recommends against installing Spybot. I've never seen one.

The thing is, Spybot's not competing against other similar programs so whatever it detects is a plus. And as you say, you can always have a few different ones running.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions.I took a chance and bought Panda Titanium which has a firewall. Its a memory hog, but it seems to be working great.
