DVD / CD rewriteable not reading any cd under windows 98 se

I installed a DVD /CD rewritable unit model number DW-U10a by sony onto my pentium II running windows 98SE. The system recognizes the drive and under device manager see's it and says device ir running fine. The problem I am having is that when I insert a CD of any kind the drive wont read it. The msg generated is "D: is not accesable. The drive is not ready". I tried searching the sony website for drivers but could not find what I am looking for. Can any one please inform me as to what is needed in order for the drive to read media inserted into it, or at least recognize there is something inside it.???
During my searching I came across maybe needing drivers or firmware??? Please help me, I am getting frustrated..

Check the flat ribbon (data) cable connected to the drive. It may be the wrong way round. The ribbon cable has a red line along one edge which should be fitted so that the red line is nearest to the power socket on the back of the drive. Also check the jumper on the drive -- if the drive shares a ribbon cable with another drive, one must be jumpered as 'master' and the other as 'slave' -- they cannot both be the same.
