Unable to see video on DVD-ROM drive

Hi,

I have a SONY notebook computer with WINDOWS 98.
It has a DVD-ROM drive. However when I play DVD video discs, I can hear the audio but no video comes. This is the case with all DVDs'.
Do you know why this could be a problem. It tried with several DVD playing software like Power DVD, Win DVD, Blaze DVD player, Super DVD player. But no use. Do you know what could be wrong and how I could fix this ?

thanks

first check your hardware configuration make sure dvd rom drive is actually listed as a dvd rom drive. -had one time installed a dvd rom drive and it was identified as a cd rom drive.just like it does for some cd-r/rw drives when you install them you have to have the right drivers installed telling windows its a dvd rom drive or cd r/rw ect. make sure you've got all the codecs installed . might be missing one.which is why your hearing it and not seeing it. or your hardware ie onboard video considering its a laptop may not be up to the task of dvd decoding and playing or your processor but considering no specs really cann't say

It is a DVD-ROM drive. I had played DVDs' a year ago. But after a year's gap when I tried DVD video discs recently, it was not recognizing DVDs'. I was told the problem could be with my media playing software (SONY provided media bar). So I uninstalled media bar and installed various DVD software like Power DVD, Blaze DVd player, superdvd player and Win DVD player. The difference is that now these players can recognize when I insert a DVD but I hear only the audio. I see no video. Hope this gives you some additional clues about the problem. Any additional suggestions on how to proceed based on this info would be welcome.

it might by a driver conflict even though you removed the sony media bar it might have left some stuff in their that didn't remove.or it could be that the dvd drive head is drity, out of alignment, just like cd player the drive head can it dumped out of alignment.had a early cd drive in a car after a year and a half had to have the head realigned it was only playing one side of the audio. thank god for mantainance agreements because almost a year and a half after tha had to have it done again. theirs a ton of possabilities that it can be. want your going to have to do is go through all the possabilities one by one tell it works because without the machine right in front of me it hard to pin down exactly.first I'd go through and check the reg see if anything from that sony media bar is still in their. if their is take it out completely.then reinstall the new media dvd player.make sure you've got all the necessary codecs for dvd playing.just because you put in a dvd media player software in doesn't mean you've got all the codec installed that you need.but the fact that you said it stop recognizing dvd's on the sony media bar would leave me to believe it could be a dirty drive head-lens,a out of alignment dvd drive head,or a dieing dvd drive in general,or a dieing or faillong video on board video chip.
