Computer doesn't start (this should be a challenge)

My computer won't start in anything but safe mode. If I try to boot it into normal mode, it will instantly shut down.

When I right-click on My Computer and select Properties, the Performance tab says the following four things:

Compatibility-mode paging reduces overall performance.
Drive A is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.
Drive C is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.
Drive D is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.

Drive C and D are hard drives, and A is, of course, the Floppy Drive.

I'm running an IBM computer, Win98.

I don't know how this happened. All I did was update my Norton Antivirus via Liveupdate.

Also, according to Norton Antivirus, the computer has no viruses.

Please help.
