Display settings

Hi i recently installed win98 on a m8s comp.. ive installed everything and it's all going sweet except one thing.. i can't mess with my display seetings.. i can't use the resolution slider at all it just sits on the bottom and it won't let me change the frm 16bit colour seettings.. when i usally do this i just install the nvdia driver for my 3dfx card and it sorts it out.. only problem is that my m8 has no graphics card at all.... so this won't work!!! can somone plz tell me how to make it so i can choose resolution and colour settings.

This probably means that your mate's computer has onboard graphics which cannot display settings above what you see selected in the display settings. You install a graphics card temporarily for testing purposes, and disable the onboard, and I bet you can then change the res.

more often than not, with a little research you can turn up an onboard graphics driver for your (or your friend's)motherboard. look in the device manager and look under display adapters to see if there is any specific info on the graphics chipset. then it is just a matter of searching the internet for the latest drivers for it. your fresh windows install loaded microsoft's generic drivers for the device, and because they are generic, you have little functionality. also, as jonathen was pointing to, if the computer in question is very old, the onboard chip may not have the capability to do much more than it is.
