Constant Freezing

My computer is constantly freezing on me. I run windows ME through DSL connection. I try to correct the problems with it by running scandisk and defragmentation but it will freeze immediately if I try. I've tried both in safe mode and it still freezes. I've run spybot and anti-virus and I'm infected but it won't finish the scans without freezing so I can't correct that problem. Also most websites freeze my computer. I've done a clean boot hoping this would help my clearing up space and it didn't help at all. I have 4.12 GB of space out of 5.99 GB possible. What can I do to help? Any type of scan I try to run at all freezes me up. I'm getting pretty irritated. Thanks.

I've also tried to update my windows which causes freezing. Basically I can't download most programs or files without a complete freeze. Just thought I should add this. Thanks again.
