As soon as I turn on my pc after the win98 logo it prompts me to sellect the comand prompt only and then come up with the final message to say file missing or corrupted C:\windows\himen.sys and the only way is to extract it from a cdrom but my pc is not readingany drive except the C drive and i cant get to the start up menu......I need help I am newbie!!!

First you did not need to start another thread.

You will need to enter the bios setup and change the boot order, you need as first boot device the CD and second Floppy third HDD , till problem is fixed.

If you do not know how to enter bios setup try the Delete key and start tapping it as soon as you power up comp. If that does not work go to the comps manufacture web site and search for the key to press. Still no success post make and model of comp.

you may have a bad memory module.

After changeing the boot order can you tell if it is booting from the CD ?

Try useing a boot floppy (ww.bootdisk.com) , does it foot from the floppy ?

If you are getting the himem is missing error no mater what yu boot from than it allmost has to be bad memory. the only way to proceed is to replace bad memory card. You can run a memory test program , google for memtest.

Get a boot disk, Fdisk the drive, delete ALL partitions if more than 1 available and re-run the setup.

If more than 1 memory stick available, remove 1 and try and boot the system, if same error, remove the other and put in the old 1, try again, if same.
Also try and boot with NO memory installed, see if you get any memory post beep errors.

If no, could be a motherboard issue.
