muting sliders 98se

i have a computer running 98 se,the volume control sliders keep muting themselves,after every reboot.hence no sound,any ideas ,help?

Hi Pete, I have heard this problem before and I recall that it was resolved by removing the sound card from device manger, rebooting and letting Windows re-install the appropriate drivers. If you take this road you might be as well to get the latest drivers for your sound card.
Before you try this check in:
Start=>Programs=>Start up
to see if you have any programs, games or media players. Check in their preference or option areas for "mute" or "mute at start up" or such.

i cannot find any problems with media player and there is no sound card fitted,sound must be on motherboard.may be something in bios?

Sounds like you have ac97 onboard sound. I had a lot of trouble with it myself. I installed a sound card and no more trouble. I understand the newer ac97 are better though. As swoolgrove suggested, try reinstalling the driver for it or finding an updated one preferably. Reinstalling the driver always fixed mine for a little while.
