Rundll Error Message on Win ME
Hello,
My friend Robert received an old E-machine about two weeks ago(with Win ME) from his friend Jane who was upgrading to a new PC with Win XP. Robert is retired,on a fixed income and has very little PC experience. He also has never had a PC at home before. Jane's old PC is out of warranty and there is also no tech support available.
So I went to Robert's home and I set-up Jane's PC for him.I then called Comcast and I set-up a high-speed Internet account with them after Robert had purchased a cable modem at the local CompUSA. When I got onto the web I found out that Jane's PC was loaded with spyware, adware, viruses and worms! I instantly downloaded AdAware SE and signed Robert up for a month's free trial of AVG Anti-Virus plus Firewall. On the first scan I found 138 viruses!! Each scan after that I found more new viruses...but less viruses each time that I ran the scan.
I finally removed the last virus and I received a clean result on the last scan. All of the viruses, etc are now still contained in the virus vault.I then removed all of the adware, spyware, etc. with AdAwareSE. Right after doing that I found out that Jane had NEVER downloaded even one update from Microsoft in all of the years that she had her PC!! So I instantly downloaded every update available. So far, everything was running very smoothly.
But then I made a BIG mistake!! I uninstalled a program that Jane had installed on her PC which Robert decided that he would never use at all. Immediately after that I installed a free trial of AOL 9.0 SE and I instantly got error message 63-AYCX.The program that I uninstalled had some extra files which remained after the uninstall. So I uninstalled those files separately and that was when all of the problems with the PC began. I realize now that was a BIG mistake!! I then called AOL Tech Support and they told me that they couldn't help me.
The problems have continued to get worse every day and now Robert has been unable to connect to the Internet for over a week.He keeps getting a constant RUNDLL error message everytime he reboots the PC that says: RUNDLL - Error loading C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~1.DLL He also keeps receiving messages that the system is unstable and is contantly busy. As a result of that not even one program will run on the PC now at all.I have tried to type in MSCONFIG in the RUN box (to uncheck NEWDOT) but I am unable to type anything into the box at all.
I have tried to run the PC in Safe Mode but that no longer works anymore either.I tried to run ScanDisk many times but it just freezes up the PC.
I read in a forum that someone else was having a similar problem with Rundll error messages and a loss of internet connection due to adware or spyware. It was suggested that downloading LSPFix.exe would correct the problem. So I downloaded it onto a floppy from my PC at home. I then tried rebooting Robert's PC with the floppy in the drive. After following the on-screen instructions I received a message that said that the errors were corrected. But when I re-started the PC again the same RUNDLL error message was still there! So I had just about given up trying to fix the PC for Robert until something unusual happened.
What happened was that I was finally able to get ScanDisk running today after many reboots! After running it the results showed 19,259,392 bytes of data in 3 lost file fragments! I was given three options: 1. Discard the lost file fragments and recover disk space;2. Convert the lost file fragments into files;3. Ignore and continue. Since I don't to just guess and choose the wrong option I decided to join this forum, post my question here and ask for help in making the right decision. So both Robert and I would really appreciate ANY suggestions that the forum members can give us in order to get his PC to run normally again.Sorry for the long posting but I didn't know how else to explain the problem.
Thanks for your help,
Mark
