New Modem...Can't Access The Net
I recently reinstalled Win 98 SE. Since the pc didn't "recognize" the old modem, I put it in the shop to have a new one installed. It's a PCI SoftV92 voice softening modem.
When I brought it home, I found I could not download my MSN completely. When it got to the dialing part, the pc either froze (requiring either manual turning off or unplugging it), OR shut off quickly OR showed a black colored screen with the mesage "Windows Protection Error. You should restart your pc."
The pc shop has nothing more to offer after the modem was installed.
When I tried to download in "Safe Mode" I got this message: "Your modem is not working properly or is already in use......etc.
When I checked under "Modem Properties/Resources" I got this message: "This device isn't using any resources because it's not currently enabled or has a problem".
I feel the problem is a simple one, but no one seems to know what it may be, and most people, including those at the pc shops don't want to bother with a dinosaur like Win 98 SE.
Needless to say, I would appreciate any assistance. Thank you in advance.

I wonder you paid for a service you did't get. Didn't you see it working on Dial-up to Google for example? .........Seems a tad careless if you paid-up.....
If there is an issue, the shop will attempt to blame you - your phone everything except themselves ...take it back and get them to show it works...that's what you paid for.
I'm not too hot on Modems - but don't understand what you say about "...not recognising the old modem..."
Was it secondhand and you just hoped it was OK? ---reloading your OS seems a bit drastic....provided you have the Win CD and even better, the right install software...that should be enough.
Of course you could download new drivers, that might help.....
[You must be on-line to report this problem, so I presume you can search for a new driver/helpfile etc.]
Anyone know more....there isn't much to go on, is there?
PS Safe-mode loads minimum of drivers, I'm not sure if it would load yr modem...but it's odd it recognises a problem.
I have an external moden, supplied by the ISP/Cable co..with a 10/100 card inside the pc. It provides broadband at 2M, I guess. Seems reliable enough but beware that "Win98 is no longer supported"...it's creeping down to all vendors.....gives them an excuse to do nothiing.

"I recently reinstalled Win 98 SE" did you use a MS cd or a recovery cd ?
IF MS cd did you install all of the mother board drivers ?
IF you go into Control Panel/System/Device Manager- are there any yellow flags?
Do you have the install CD for your new modem ?

With your telephone cord installed into "line" on modem.. Go to control panel, click on modem. Find the "diadnostics" tab and click "query". This will test the modem. If you get data under Comm and Response the modem is functioning fine. If not --your drivers for the modem are not loaded or not loaded properly. Good luck Lenny

98 modem
1st,you can NOT download or be online in safe mode.
next, dowload the driver for that modem for a 98 box.
and that is IF it works on 98, if not, get a old modem that works on 98.
Lenny said this... With your telephone cord installed into "line" on modem.. Go to control panel, click on modem. Find the "diadnostics" tab and click "query". This will test the modem. if you have done what Lenny said and that modem does show data but still will not dial up, then you could do as i suggested or shut down the computer and put the modem in another port slot, it likes port 3 for some reason, lol
then boot up and let windows find it,etc..

First of all, thats for Windows XP - Also to query a modem, you don't need your phone line plugged in to query a modem, as your'e only checking the modem and NOT the phone line
By the sounds of it, the modem is not configured properly and / or Windows not playing ball and just doesn't like the modem drivers.
Try and get updated drivers for this modem you've just brought.

Not true....
Windows XP May have "Generic" drivers for certain modems, but not all modems.
Some modems will require additional drivers (Hence reason for having CDs)
But seeing as his machine is a 98SE Machine, it won't have drivers as he'll need to download / use the modem CD He go with the PC , most drivers I believe will be on the Windows 98SE setup CD.
