Unable to upgrade XP and will not uninstall

Pleazzz can someone out there help

I have a Samsung GT8000 Series notebook.

My orginal OS was ME I decided to upgrade to XP Professional.

The result was that it could not load the XP as there was missing a hul.dll file.

It gave me the option to unistall the XP, I went ahead and did this however it did not unistall and refuses me access to my ME.

I subsequently installed win98 into a seperate folder and on boot up it gives me the option to either go into XP OS or Win98 or choosing the Win98 my display settings are set at 16 color and my touchpad doesn't work so I am unable to access my data files in order for me to try and back up before its lost completely.

found this in MS knowledge base, and assumed you mean "hal.dll"
Use the Bootcfg utility in the Recovery Console to correct the Boot.ini file:
Use the Windows XP CD-ROM to start your computer.
When you receive the message to press R to repair Windows by using the Recovery Console, press the R key.
Select the Windows installation that you want, and then type the administrator password when prompted.
Type bootcfg /rebuild, and then press ENTER.
When the Windows installation is located, the following instructions are displayed:
Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All)
[Type Y in response to this message.]
