AC'97 Problems in Windows ME

After reformatting the hard drive, I no longer have sound. I have tried removing the device through device manager and than letting windows reinstall it. I have downloaded the newer driver from Realtek, but to no avail. I also tried changing the option from Auto to Enabled in BIOS, but again no sound.

In the Control Panel, the Audio/ Multimedia tabs will not allow me to select Realtek AC'97 (my imbedded card) as the preferred audio device. Does anyone think of anything else I can try?

Anything else? -- yes my friend. Ditch Windows ME and either upgrade to XP, or 'downgrade' to Windows 98SE which is far less troublesome and will run easily on your current hardware. WinME was the spawn of the devil and should never have seen the light of day.
