usb port not found

was trying to print a doc today and my printer that is plugged into a usb port came up with an error message, "usb port not connected". have tried restarting, changing cables, changing ports, changing ports and restarting, printer port capture, aaaarrrggghhh also uninstalled and reinstalled printer software.

still no joy. tried to plug in a card reader and a thumb drive and also cannot see them. tried them in multiple ports and still no luck. i have two usb cards (i think that's what they're called) and one usb slot near my power supply, none seem to be working.

my thought was if it were one of the cards ok, i could replace it. but none of the usb ports on different cards seem to be working.

last, under device manager, i have an error next to pci communication device and pci universal serial bus. tried to update drivers, but wasn't able to.

any ideas?

I am not the most sophisticated computer user, so i hope this isn't a dumb ? for you folks.

oh yeah, i'm running windows me, zone alarm, AVG from grisoft antivirus, spybot s&d, adaware and hjt. and everything was fine three days ago. just finished virus scan (clean), scandisc (all errors fixed), adaware, and spybot (clean). yesterday tried to print, got the error message, turned the printer off then back on and it printed fine. today, that doesn't help. the printer will copy stuff and print, but just won't print from the computer.

nothing new installed or run

thanks in advance for the time and effort

Hi airken,

This is Renjith.

Please check in the Device Manager window to see any conflicts there.

Please right click on My Computer icon and select Properties.

Then, select Hardware tab and finally click on Device Manager button to get Device Manager window.

Please check whether you see yellow exclamation mark on any of the devices listed there.

The Device Manager is a tool included with Microsoft Windows operating systems that allows the user to display and control the hardware attached to the computer. When a piece of hardware is not working, the offending hardware is highlighted where the user can deal with it. The list of hardware can be sorted by various criteria.

The yellow exclamation in the Device Manager refers to Hardware conflict.

I would like to forward the steps to troubleshoot hardware resource and device conflicts in Device Manager in the Microsoft Windows XP operating system.

Follow this procedure to troubleshoot resource and device conflicts.

NOTE: Some devices may not be seen or easily removed without starting the computer in Safe Mode.

Follow this procedure to remove a device from Device Manager in the Microsoft Windows XP operating system.

IMPORTANT: This procedure must be performed while logged in as Administrator or to an account with Administrator rights.

Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.
In the Control Panel window, under Pick a category, double-click the Performance and Maintenance icon.
In the Performance and Maintenance window, under or pick a Control Panel icon, double-click the System icon.
In the System Properties window, click the Hardware tab.
On the Hardware tab, in the Device Manager box, click the Device Manager button.
In the Device Manager window, double-click the category icon of the device to be removed.
Under the Device Manager category, click to select the device to be removed.
On the menu bar, click Action.
On the Action menu, click Uninstall.
In the Confirm Device Removal window, click the OK button.
In the System Settings Change window, click the Yes button.

After performing these steps please follow the steps mentioned below:

Reset the computers BIOS to the default values.
Ensure any missing hardware device is properly seated in the expansion slot.
Remove all third-party hardware.
Restart the computer.

If the issue still persist Restore the computer to a previous working configuration using System Restore.

Performing those steps should resolve the issue.

Please let me know does that help to resolve the issue.

Thanks and regards

Renjith,

Er.....Did you actually READ the guys post? The guy has WINDOWS ME!! not XP as your post relates too.
With all the faults he is having, a system restore may work, or a full format should cure it

This is interesting, because I couldn't see the OS amongst all the chit-chat....I had to look twice, so maybe that's the real lesson.

Having stated The Issue, then your system should be described...not every detail, but relevent to the problem.
In addition_ I'd suggest we should say what we did "before" this problem arose - it may have been "brought-on" ....of course in many instances the PC croaks and we have done nothing, or an installed piece of software may have been "provoked" by some set of circumstances and this created mayhem in the Registry, (etc.) - until the exact same combination occurs, it will not do it again and mostly folk put it down to a "bug" - or maybe a "Spike". Computer software is never 100% bug-free.

So, in this case it is Windows-ME and presumably the author has the disc and is naturally hoping they can avoid starting over again. But it sounds somewhat severe....I wonder what were they doing to cause it?

Wait a Bit.... how are they making contact if all the PCI-bits are out of service?
If they ae using another PC perhaps that should be made clear....
Every bit helps, eh?
