Smile Windows 98 And Dial-up

Please can someone help me with a very frustrating problem.

I have a Windows 98 computer which uses a dial-up to the Internet.
The computer offline works fine. However, when I dial-up, the connection is made but it is imposssible to browse. One of the following usually happens:

1 Dial-up happens but browser won't go to any web pages.
2 Dial-up happens, browser goes to web pages so slowly, it times out.
3 Dial-up fails. There is no answer and I get an error message, "Error 678. Computer not answering.

Is it possible someone could advise me as to what to do - thank you.

usally gill,,, error 678 is down to your isp.. when server goes down ,,also if you go to tools in IE options then connections..go to properties and you can adjust time ,,so connection dont time out..just out of curiosity,,ever thought of going onto broadband,,you can get 1 or 2 mb isp for as litlle as £10 i am sure dial up would cost more as for connection charge every time you dial up to isp and rate per minute.. regular use would be double what you pay on a broadband connection i would say. 56 k will be slow ,,as your not actually gettign 56k its more like 30k and as for busy times of the day usally evening after ..6 pm the connection will even be slower. any thoughts ..on upgrading..just post .

http://www.top10-broadband.co.uk/?l4...UK%20Broadband put your postcode and phone number in and check whats available to you, ukonline broadband does a 512kps package for 9.99 a month if you check around you could get 1 mb for 12.99 a month,, tiscali does cheap broadband,,i am on 4thenet.co.uk and i pay 19.99 thats for 8 mb broadband . and also it depends what cap you want unlimited will cost more but if your just a regular sufer and dont download big files 3 or 5 gig a month would be ok. maybe more users can give you thread to a better broadband service they use.
