No audio, but no errors?!

OK, my info may be sparse, because I'm hoping this is not a platform specific, but general "know what you're doing" kind of issue.
I have an Avedo 350MHz AMD K6-2 3D, 256MB RAM Award BIOS 4.51PG
It has a Gigabyte GA-5AMMC MOBO, w/
Onboard ESS Solo-1 ES1938S PCI Sound onboard (but says ALi1542 AGP chip - for video??, and ALI 1533 PCI to ISA)
ATi Rage IIC AGP ONboard (4MB SGRAM)
LG CDROM CRD 8322B; LITE_ON LTR 52327S (R/W)
Had ALI M5229PCI - gone (but drivers remain - delete?)
Running Win 98SE

I was having issues about 2 years ago, took it to a shop. They "fixed" it, but I decided to go for new system, so took both home; one day plugged in the dinosaur: ran, but - NO SOUND! Called shop. He said ""re-install audio drivers". Did that, no help. I threw it in closet & forgot it.
Now, friend wants a "basic" tower, so I'm making it work - HA!
Everything is groovy: only yellow in Device Mgr is Joystick - so what.
I updated audio driver, and a few others. I run Win Media Player, looks great, the slider rolls merrily along, thinking everything's copacet...uh, OK
BUT! - Still no sound - on either headphones or speakers. I've looked at audio controller, nothing muted. everything looks good.
What's wrong with this pic---uliar situation??

Have u checked the audio settings in control panel.Does it give a name in ur audio device or does it say no audio..I used to have a similar problem. It happens even if ur pci bridge has not been installed properly.Check it and try reinstalling pci bridge from ur motherboard cd..Its bound to work.

Audio settings are all OK - everything is all OK, I just don't get sound!!!
BIOS shows nothing I recognize as being related to onboard audio. INtegrated Peripherals doesn't, either.
I will try the PCI bridge.
Could the version of Win Media Player have something to do with it? Should I drop back to an earlier version?
