No Audio Device!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Folks, my PC got a Trojan and caused havoc with a few of my drivers. The thing zapped my Mouse, Display, and Sound drivers. I got my mouse and display working properly now, but I can’t seem to fix the sound. So I’m asking for a little help.
I am running a Dell Dimension XPS B800r, 800mhz Intel, 256mb RDRAM, and running Windows 98se. I know she’s old and obsolete, but she still works great and runs faster than most of my friends’ new XP machines. The sound card is a Sound Blaster Live (Value) (model CT4780).
I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled the whole Sound Blaster software twice. I have double-checked that all physical connections are connected. The LED volume and power lights are illuminated on the speakers, so there is power going to them. In the Device Manager, it states that Creative SB Value “is working properly”. BUT the AudioHQ icon is not displayed in the TaskBar and when I try to open it through the Control Panel, I get the infamous “No Audio Device” prompt. This also happens when I try to open any of the SB programs (or it says that SB is not installed on this computer) Also, in the Device Manager, there was a conflict with a device listed under “Other Devices”. I am pretty sure it was a SB driver, but when I clicked the ‘Update Driver’ button, it seemed to find the driver and install it. BUT during the process, it stated that it couldn’t find file “ctmisc.cat” and listed a file location of WINDOWS\CATROOT (or something like it) I clicked OK and it continued the install, The (!) in the Device Manager went away, but so did the ‘Other Devices’ listing. I found a new listing under the ‘Creative Miscellaneous Devices’ called ‘Creative SB16 Emulation’. I am pretty sure this was the device that was listed under ‘Other Devices’. It now states that it is working properly. I have tried Creative’s AutoUpdate feature on their website, but it states that there are no updates available. Regardless, I still have no sound and none of the audio programs or files will work. Could my Chipset driver be causing this???
Anyway, with no more driver conflicts in the Device Manager, I’m fresh out of ideals.
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED,
TOM

thats a hard one to work out i never heard of ctmisc.cat it sounds like a catalogue file of some sort..have you ever thought of installing win 2000 pro,,your pc would take it and its alot better than 98se. you can pick up win 2000 pro cheap nowadays. and more upto date drivers as well. it will detect your soundblaster card and any other drivers needed .

The proper place to look for drivers for Dell machines is on the Dell website as they have have been tested to work on Dell machines.

Thanks for the help
I quickly got my mouse and video working (I guess the Video cards internal memory was corrupt, so I had to replace the card)
BUT I STILL HAVE NO SOUND
Sorry for the long post, but I’ll start with what I have and what I’ve done. My computer is an old Dell 800mhz Dimension XPS B800r running Win98SE, 512mb RDRAM, and a Creative Sound Blaster Live Value soundcard model # CT4780.
I first tried to delete ALL Creative software on the computer. I started with the uninstall wizard and deleted the drivers from the device manager. I ran a search on the computer for the key words ‘Creative’, ‘Sound Blaster’ and ‘Soundblaster’ and deleted all remnants of the program. Even without reinstalling the software, windows still finds the drivers from the registry. I’m not sure how to delete these drivers. When I reinstall the Sound Blaster software (I have the original disk) I get a prompt telling me that the software is already installed and should be deleted first. I went ahead and reinstalled the software anyway, after-which, I clicked ‘update driver’ in the Device Manager under the Multimedia tab. I have restarted the computer several times to make sure the drivers updated, but still no sound. I KNOW my speakers work and I have removed and re-set my sound card. When I try to play an audio file I get the ‘no audio device’ or ‘PlayCenter could not find the necessary hardware or drivers’ prompt. I get no error indicators in the Device Manager – no yellow ‘!’s. There are three devices listed under ‘Creative Miscellaneous Devices”, which are; ‘Creative Gameport Joystick’, ‘Creative MultiMedia Interface’, and ‘Creative SB16 Emulation’. All seem to be running fine. Under the ‘Sound, Video and Game Controllers’; there is listed ‘Creative SB Live! Value’, and ‘Wave Device for Voice Modem’. All have the ‘Exist in all hardware profiles’ block checked. If I click on the AudioHQ icon in the control panel, I get the ‘no audio device’ prompt. The little ‘speaker’ for the volume control is missing from the desktop taskbar. And when I click on Multimedia from the control panel, there are no devices loaded under the ‘audio’ tab.
I’m thinking my problem is just a missing file or a wrong setting somewhere, but I’m all out of ideals.
Any Ideals???

I expect the files are in system32/drivers or something. Not sure on win98. Probably they begin with CT. Like CTgame.sys, CTaud.sys etc.
