New Install Win98se-bogged down system

I recently re-installed win98se on this old HP Pavilion 6730 for my Grandson.
It has only 320 MB of Ram and a 10.2 gig hard-drive. My C-drive has free space of 8.35 gig.

I installed an Trendnet 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter and am able to get on-line.

The problem is, when I get on-line, I'm limited to that one try. If I hit a link in a web-site, like this one, the page will slowly start to load, and then I get the "page will not display" notice.

Also, when I freshly boot and right\click My Computer\Explore, the menu quickly opns, but there will be the timer on my pointer for about 20 seconds, and then I'll click Explore and it quickly opens, but again the timer comes on my pointer again.

Something is dragging down my normal off-line and on-line attempt.

I've checked misconfig for startup items and unchecked those not needed.

I'll add more info.

Thanking you in advance for any help.

First off. New installs of win 98 are bad idea. No updates are available. Even if you know where to get them, it's a real risk online.

"My computer" does not need an online connection.
You have a firewall etc? I'm tempted to say you have been infected with something.
I've seen a sytem catch a trojan using XP within seconds of first time online. Needless to say, that user never goes online without protection of a firewall since. 98 has no chance.

BTW. It seems the pavilion has a celeron 600. It will run XP. 320 megs of ram is wasted on 98. Take the better option and use XP. Use 98 for the old stuff it's meant for. Older games etc.

Hi. Thanks for the response.

Actually, I finally was able to do a fresh install of Win98se. I had most of the drivers and, with assistance, I found the rest.

I had, and have the Sygate Firewall, AVG, and spyware and adware apps.

It's not here now, but I think it only had 300 to 400 processor. The memory was maxed out at 320.

It will just be used for older games and light e-mail.

He says it's running great. I got lucky this time.

Thanks again. rgsmile
