Explorer.exe crashing after close of IE

I am working on my work computer and everytime I close the Internet Explorer window, the Explorer.exe stops responding. The computer is running Windows 98 SE, the only reason I haven't upgraded it to xp is that it is running old software that we no longer have the cd's for and without the software the business wouldn't run. It happens almost everytime, so if you open an internet explorer window it has to stay open the entire time you use the computer. You can close pop-ups, but no main windows, so if YOU open two internet explorers they both must remain open or it crashes. I am running IE6.

Any insights would be great.

Please can you confirm -- is it 'Explorer.exe' (Windows Explorer) that stops responding or 'Iexplore.exe' (Internet Explorer) that stops responding? Diagnosing the problem is different in each case.
