scandisc will not repair all bad sectors

Sys win98se, trying to reinstall win98se but cannot because of some problem with the disc, I ran scandisc thorough but it could not repair all bad sectors. What does this mean and how do I fix the problem?

Not a lot to go on ..was it working OK?...what changed? Also we need to know your system and drive size. and how full the disc is etc...

So, Repairing bad sectors is not IMHO the issue - they are normally marked "bad and not used" - but if the HDD is clogged-up then you may also have a space-problem...........

Many Win98SE were supplied with small discs and if it hasn't been defragged regularly (and used too much) I think you may be experiencing Full-disc. Perhaps for the sake of getting it back again you need to beg/borrow a HDD or even Buy one (a nice 80G is ever-so cheap). This should repair yr system - then maybe you can Slave the old HDD.......ie before your "new" PC contains any valuable data.

A while ago I had a Win98se setup (this one! - still working) and Scandisc would keep stopping - the answer (from memory) was to do the "thorough" check and repair.....I recall it took overnight to resolve the whole disc (only 5G!!) and then Defrag would run also.
However, if you are experiencing problems you need to verify the PC is OK (hence the replacement HDD) - then you can tackle to rougue drive.
IF it contains valuable data (you don't say) then don't play with it...better to take it to a specialist to recover the data....expensive I fear.

It seems many here are suggesting ScanDisc is NOT used to Fix all faults - better to have it Log the faults and try to resolve them manually - a recent post gives a link to a expose on the usefulness of ScanDisc and what is "safe".
You'd think by now there would be definative "better" program......which doesn'r wrect the PC - no point in having a fixed HDD if it won't perform.
